Resident Caryl Horn, takes advantage of all the lifestyle opportunities that Silvera for Seniors' Westview Town Suites has to offer.

When Caryl Horn walked into the atrium of Silvera for Seniors’ Westview Town Suites senior living complex in Calgary’s southwest community of Glamorgan, she immediately felt at home.

“It was bright and beautiful; so sunny and welcoming. I immediately had my daughter come and look. When we both returned, she looked at me, and we knew right away this was it.”

What Horn and others have found at the pet-friendly, 92-unit Westview Town Suites is a sense of community that contrasts sharply with the isolation and loss of independence many seniors fear when transitioning into assisted living homes.

At Westview Town Suites, residents aged 65 and over find a range of comfortable living options, from cozy studios to spacious one bedroom and two-bedroom suites starting at $2,900 a month. The peace of mind that comes with a Lifeline emergency call system in each unit, connected to 24/7 on-site staff, is invaluable. For those who need a bit more help, additional housekeeping and laundry services are available, along with a respite suite for short-term stays.

Community members at Westview enjoy three chef inspired daily meals, with two main options and a variety of à la carte choices, as well as Sunday brunches and monthly fine dining events. Weekly housekeeping , activity and event outings and a wide range of on-site lifestyle, leisure and learning activities are also provided. These activities include everything from jewelry making courses and fashion shows to chef-led pasta making classes.

“The ultimate goal is to draw people out, whether they are artists, athletes or scholars,” says Carrie Larose, senior manager, mixed-market housing portfolio at Silvera for Seniors. “Being older doesn’t mean people stop learning.”

Horn has fully embraced the opportunities at Westview’s expansive learning and creative centres since she moved in. She is currently enrolled in an online writing class to document her life, gives self-improvement talks, coordinates and calls bingo, attends yoga classes and enjoys creative activities such as wreath making.

She also often hosts friends and family for dinners, saying, “We love the three-course meals, especially with two dessert choices and additional vegetarian options throughout the week.”

Residents, typically ranging from 75 to 105 years old (though younger individuals are also welcome), have access to various amenities at Westview Town Suites. They can reserve activity rooms for hosting birthday or anniversary parties with their children and grandchildren, and there’s a private dining room available for entertaining friends and family.

Horn often chooses to sit alone during lunch and dinner, intentionally leaving space beside her to welcome new community members, whom she then assists in “finding their own friendship circles.”

While she enjoys relaxing in her suite at night watching television or solving Sudoku puzzles on her computer, Horn’s favourite spot remains the atrium, where she knits, watches YouTube videos and catches up with friends. She describes it as her “extended living room.”

According to Larose, transitioning into a seniors’ complex can be daunting, but at Westview Town Suites, residents thrive. “You immediately feel at home; there is community. What more can anyone ask for?”
